Biog
Eugene Portman was born in Barnsley, South
Yorkshire and started playing the piano at
a very early age. He studied classicaly but
had a longing to be a jazz pianist. He now
lives in Surrey and and travels all over the
UK as both a solo performer and as a combo
player for weddings and events. Eugene has
made a name for himself for producing a type
of jazz that is easy to listen to and not
ultra modern. He is also working with three
outstanding vocalists: Dave Edwards from East
Grinstead in Sussex, Alice Harvey from Derby
and Sheila Daniels from Cheam in Surrey.
The Music
Eugene’s music is easy to listen to, whatever
combination he is playing in. His main influences
have been any jazz pianists such as: Oscar
Peterson, George Shearing, Erroll Garner or
Dudley Moore. Other musical influences have
been Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald,
and Jimmy Smith. Eugene playing tends not
to be too high-brow, but sits comfortably
in any event, party or wedding. He plays all
the great jazz standards that you would expect
but he usually finds different ways of playing
them. His repertoire covers the standards
of Gerswin, Cole Porter and Antonio Carlos
Jobim mixed with a healthy dose of fusion
numbers by musicians like George Benson and
Joe Sample. His music is ideal for events
where music is required to be inobtrusive
but he can turn up the gas when required.
Where Eugene performs as a jazz pianist
Eugene plays all over the UK but is a frequent
visitor to the Combe House Hotel, Holford,
Somerset; The Arts Club, Dover Street, London;
St Augustine's Priory, Ashford, Kent; Alexander
House, Turners Hill, West Sussex; and Denbies
Vineyard, Dorking, Surrey. Eugene has, at
one time or another, worked as a jazz pianist
in many of London's top venues including:
The Cafe Royal, Quaglinos, The Four Seasons
(The Inn On The Park), The Royal Festival
Hall, The Dorchester and the The Ivy.
Eugene's availability as a jazz
pianist
He is the perfect choice if you require
light jazz and is available for any fashion
show, wedding, corporate event or pary. Because
of his geographical location Eugene works
mostly as a jazz pianist in Sussex, Essex,
Kent, Berkshire, and London he but he will
travel a lot further if needed. He is finding
as time goes on that his work is taking him
further afield and is now a frequent visitor

Mamma
Mia's and rest assured that the music
is going to be accessible and entertaining.
Eugene's style of piano playing is melodic
and easy on the ear. His music consists
of great tunes played in his own inimitable
way. Eugene's repertoire and style of
jazz is not ultra modern and it seems
to have a 'feel good' quality. He plays
tunes that people know and he adapts
them to his own style of piano playing.
His style of piano playing is reminiscent
of Oscar Peterson, George Shearing and
Erroll Garner.
